The Biopathology Center of the CCSS, located at Children's Hospital in Columbus, Ohio, the central repository for tumor tissue samples for confirmation of diagnoses of subsequent malignancies from treating institutions of CCSS cohort participants who report a subsequent cancer.
Paraffin tumor material is collected and sent to the Center for storage for future studies. This material is stored in the Pediatric Division of the National Cancer Institute's Cooperative Human Tissue Network (CHTN) in Columbus. The Center plans to create a number of specific tissue microarrays (TMAs) using cores of tumor tissue for the paraffin blocks.
Over the next grant cycle, CCSS anticipates accrual of enough tissue from subsequent malignancies to create an average of 6 microarrays per year. We are currently accruing materials appropriate for arrays composed of:
- breast carcinomas
- thyroid carcinomas
- other carcinomas
- brain tumors
- meningiomas
- sarcomas
Because they utilize very small amounts of the available tumor tissue, such TMAs will allow a relatively large number of studies to be conducted. These materials are available to researchers by the Children's Hospital Tumor Network through the CCSS approval process.
