The Biopathology Center of the Childhood Cancer Survivor Study (CCSS), located at Children's Hospital in Columbus, Ohio, requests tumor tissue for confirmation of diagnoses of second malignancies from treating institutions of CCSS cohort participants who have had a second cancer.
The Center has recently begun retrospectively to collect paraffin tumor material for the creation of an archive for future studies. This material is stored in the Pediatric Division of the National Cancer Institute's Cooperative Human Tissue Network (CHTN) in Columbus. At present, the Center has paraffin-embedded specimens or slides from 138 tumors and plans to create a number of specific tissue microarrays (TMAs) using cores of tumor tissue from the paraffin blocks.
Over the next grant cycle, CCSS anticipates accrual of enough tissue from second malignancies to create an average of 6 microarrays per year. We are currently accruing materials appropriate for arrays composed of 1) breast carcinomas, 2) thyroid carcinomas, 3) other carcinomas, 4) brain tumors, 5) meningiomas, and 6) sarcomas. With the passage of time, we may also be able to collect sufficient materials to create other specific arrays, for example of renal cell carcinomas, melanomas, etc.
